Justine Glanfield, a British knitwear designer, bought this five-story house in the Ixelles neighborhood of Brussels with her French husband, Vincent Fournier, a photographer. It was built in 1912 and had not been lived in since the 1960s. The house has 300 square meters (3,230 square feet) of space.

The dining room. Ms. Glanfield acquired furniture from markets and antique shops in Brussels and Amsterdam.

The couple moved from London to Ixelles in the summer of 2007 with their son, Oscar. The major renovation work took ten months

The terrace looks out over the city. "With the Wednesday afternoon market, all the boutiques and the greenery," Ms. Glanfield said, "it really has more of a village atmosphere than the feeling of a city."

A short-term rental at the basement level lets plenty of light into the dining area. At left, a photograph by Mr. Fournier adorns the wall above the couch.

Oscar's vintage bed was bought at a flea market. The bumper and cushions were sewed by Ms. Glanfield from 1950s curtain fabric.

For the blue stone used as kitchen counter tops, Ms. Glanfield tracked down the lowest prices from a local artisan.
